It's nice to agree on a genre you both enjoy - rock, country, R&B pop - as after all, this is going to be officially 'your song' after the wedding!

The Top 20 Songs to Walk Down the Aisle to

When it comes to your aisle music (also known as your processional), rhythm is key. Unnecessary as this may sound, we strongly suggest you practise walking to your chosen song. Trust us, some beats are really hard to walk to, and you don't want to make your entrance as if you're attempting to break land-speed records or at a painfully slow shuffle. You should also discuss with whoever's in charge of hitting 'play' exactly when you'll start walking - you may want to let the song build for a bit - and when it should finish, ideally at a fade, so the music doesn't come to an abrupt halt. Other than that, whether you're making an entrance together or separately, we've found some excellent options for the start of the ceremony.

1. At Last – Etta James

If you're not having this for your first dance, it's a sophisticated choice for walking down the aisle.

2. Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World – Israel Kamakawiwo’ole

The original Over the Rainbow would be a bit of a nightmare to walk to - this upbeat version would make the aisle-walk much easier.

3. Songbird – Fleetwood Mac

Either the original or the Eva Cassidy version would certainly tug the heartstrings as you walk down the aisle.

4. Here Comes The Sun – The Beatles

An upbeat choice for making an entrance and setting the mood for your wedding.

5. Thinking Out Loud – Ed Sheeran

At 3.21, this is definitely too long to play in its entirety (unless you have a massive aisle), so choose the section you like best.

6. Lucky – Jason Mraz ft. Colbie Caillat

We suggest starting your walk at the chorus for maximum effect.

7. A Thousand Years – Christina Perri

Gorgeously romantic, this is a song to float down the aisle to.

8. Canon in D Major (Pachelbel’s Canon) – J.S. Bach Orchestra

This is a traditional wedding aisle song that's full of elegance. If your budget allows, it sounds particularly lovely played live by a string quartet.

9. Your Song – Ellie Goulding

This is a softer version of the Elton John classic, making it a graceful choice for your walk down the aisle.

10. I’m Kissing You – Des’ree

Remember Romeo + Juliet? I'm Kissing Youis a central part of the soundtrack, and would be a romantic, nostalgia-tinged choice.

11. Everybody’s Free (To Feel Good) – Quindon Tarver

Another Romeo +Juliet alumnus, this song isn't exactly romantic but it's a unique, alternative song for walking down the aisle.

12. Butterfly Waltz – Brian Crain

Pretty, delicate and easy to walk to - what more could you want in a wedding aisle song?

13. From This Moment On – Shania Twain & Bryan White

The lyrics are made for a wedding ceremony, but be warned, it takes a while to build, so you'll need to time in carefully.

14. What A Wonderful World – Louis Armstrong

Want to reduce your wedding guests to tears? Walk down the aisle to this heartfelt classic.

15. Bella’s Lullaby – Carter Burwell, Dan Redfeld and Elizabeth Hedman

This instrumental may be associated with Twilight, but we think it's moving enough to transcend its cinematic origins.

16. The Secret Wedding (From “Braveheart”) – David Arkenstone featuring Kathleen Fisher

Another cinematic beauty, this composition from Braveheart has a lot of charm. Just don't shout, 'Freeeeeeedooooom!' when you get to the end of the aisle.

17. Marry You – Bruno Mars

Upbeat and utterly joyful, this is a mood-lifting choice as a processional.

18. Make You Feel My Love – Adele

19. Just the Way You Are – Bruno Mars

Another upbeat choice, this is a high-energy way to make your entrance on the aisle.

The Top 20 Best Wedding Ceremony Songs

As well as the entrance or processional music, there are other opportunities to include your favourite songs in your wedding ceremony. You could have a performance of a piece you love by a singer or choir, for example, and have music playing while you're signing the register, as well as choosing tracks to play while your guests are arriving. Many couples also opt for exit music as they leave the ceremony venue.

1. Canon in D Major – Pachebel Orchestra

If you don't choose this as a processional, it's a classic choice to play as your guests are being seated.

2. Bella’s Lullaby – Carter Burwell, Dan Redfeld and Elizabeth Hedman

This pretty track is another great set-the-mood track as guests arrive at your ceremony.

3. Make You Feel My Love – ADELE

The original would be lovely as exit music; if your budget stretches to a live performance, we've heard some amazing gospel choir arrangements.

4. I’m Kissing You – Des’ree

Put a twist on this Romeo + Juliet favourite by having an instrumental version performed - the string arrangement is gorgeous.

5. The Secret Wedding (From “Braveheart”) – David Arkenstone featuring Kathleen Fisher

Make a regal exit from the ceremony with this classical composition.

14. Clair De Lune – Claude Debussy

No, not the French children's song, but the Debussy piano suite that's pure magic.

15. A Groovy Kind of Love – Phil Collins

Hear us out. The idea of a Phil Collins song during your wedding ceremony may sound like pure cheese, but it's the highest quality fromage, and all your (older) guests will know it.

16. I Knew I Loved You – Savage Garden

The vocal may be too much on the nasal side for some tastes, but there's no denying the romance of those lyrics.

17. All Of Me – John Legend

If you're hiring a gospel choir, ask them to do an arrangement of this, to put a fresh spin on a wedding perennial.

18. When You Love a Woman – Journey

This is pretty long, so best saved for the signing of the register if you want to add some vintage rock to your wedding ceremony.
