1. What Exactly Colorectal Cancer is?
Colorectal cancer is a cancer that starts in the rectum, bowel or in the colon, also known as bowel cancer, colon cancer or rectal cancer depending on where they start. Colon cancer develops in the part of large intestine (colon) and it grows abnormally which have the ability to invade or spread to other part of the body. Colorectal cancers start as a growth in the lining of the rectum. These growths are known as Polyps. Over the time, these polyps may change into cancer, but not all polyps become cancer in fact the polyp changing into cancer depends upon the type of polyp it is. The polyps are classified into two types-
- Adenomatous polyps (Adenomas): This is the common type of polyp and these type of polyps sometimes change into cancer. That is why, adenomas are called a pre-cancerous condition.
- Hyperplastic polyps and Inflammatory polyps: These type of polyps are usually harmless as this type of polyp cannot change into cancer, but if not treated early it can change into cancer. General they are not pre-cancerous.
2. What are the Stages of Colorectal Cancer?
Once found that you have been diagnosed with Colorectal cancer, doctor will try to figure it out if it has spread to other part of the body or not, if so, then how far. This whole process is termed as “Staging”. The initial stage of colorectal cancer starts from Stage 0, and then ranges from Stage 1 to Stage 4. The lower the stage, the less cancer has spread and higher the stage means the cancer has more and need to be treated immediately.
The staging system often used to describe colorectal cancer is the TNM staging system –
- Tumor – to determine how far has the cancer grown in the wall of colon or rectum and the layers, from inner lining to the outer lining.
- Node – to determine has the tumor spread to Lymph nodes.
- Metastasis – to determine whether the cancer has spread to other part of the body such as liver or lungs. If it is spread then where and how much?
This staging system is the most recent and effective system which is also known as Surgical Staging.
3. How Colorectal Cancer can be detected early?
- A persistent change in bowel habits, which includes diarrhea, constipation or a change in the consistency of your stool.
- Rectal bleeding / blood in the stool
- A feeling that bowel movement that is not relieved or bowel doesn’t empty completely.
- Fatigue and Weakness
- Weight Loss
If you notice any of these symptoms that worry you, consult your doctor immediately. If the doctor finds something during screening test, you will need to do some tests to find the cause and this will help you in detecting the colorectal cancer early.
4. What are Causes of Colorectal Cancer and the Risk Factors?
Colon cancer begins when healthy cells in the colon develop mutations in their DNA. The cells grow and divide in an orderly way to keep the functioning of the body normal, but when a cell DNA is damaged and become cancerous the cells will continue to divide even though no new cells are needed. The accumulated cells then form a tumor. With time the cells can grow and destroy the normal tissue. There are certain life-style factors that are linked to the disease-
- Overweight and Obesity
- Physical inactivity
- Smoking and heavy alcohol consumption
- Inflammatory Intestinal conditions
- Inherited syndromes that increase colon cancer risk
- Family history of colon cancer
- Previous Radiation therapy for cancer
