What I Wore On Vacation To Key West Florida - Classy Yet Trendy (2024)

My hubby and I were planning a vacation to Philadelphia this past week to the National Pool Expo (he’s an avid pool player!) and had wanted to visit a few historical sites while we were there. We had packed all our cold weather clothes the night before, but had a change of plans due to some unforeseen circ*mstances. Instead, we repacked for warm weather and took off to Key West, Florida, somewhere we have always wanted to go! I packed some clothes from my Spring capsule wardrobe, but also packed some shorts, pants and sandals.
Since I packed everything the morning we left for vacation, I didn’t have time to plan for a blog post on what I wore. However, I did get my husband to take a couple of outfits photos to share with you all!
When I am packing clothes and shoes for a vacation, I choose mainly neutral color clothes so they can mix and match easily. I also choose comfortable shoes that I can walk in all day or that are comfy while riding in the car. The number of clothes and shoes I pack depends on the number of days we will be on vacation and also depends on the temperatures of where we are going. I don’t pack “outfits”, but individual tops, bottoms, layers (depends on the temps) and shoes.

Where We Went On Vacation
Our main destination was Key West, but we visited a few other sites on the trip. We drove from where we live in Northeast Alabama all the way to Key West and back, staying overnight in hotels along our route. We drove through Orlando, south to Key West, then drove back up the west coast, along Sarasota and Clearwater, then headed west to the 30A area in Santa Rosa Beach to eat dinner at Stinky’s Fish Camp (they have excellent food), then headed north back home.
Places we visited and things we did on our vacation included: The Hemingway House & Museum, ate Key Lime Pie at Kermit’s Key Lime Pie Shoppe (it was delicious!), had our picture taken at the Southernmost Point in the U.S., took an airboat ride and walked the Pahayokee Trail in the Everglades National Park, saw the Ansel Adams and Clyde Butcher exhibits at The James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art, visited the DeSoto National Memorial Park and walked along the beach at sunset in Santa Rosa Beach.
We had a great time on our much-needed vacation and hope to go back to the beach soon!
I wore this outfit while sightseeing in Key West. My hubby snapped this photo after we had just eaten at the Conch Republic Seafood Co. and were walking around the harbor. Since the temperature that day was doing to be in the low-80’s, I wanted to wear clothes that were cool and fabrics that were breathable, plus comfy shoes for walking. I wore this Caslon linen-blend camp shirt (sizes are limited, but here are three more colors to choose from, plus a striped style in 2 colors), these Karen Kane linen shorts (this year’s style) and these casual Veja Campo sneakers. We were outside all day and walked a lot and I enjoyed wearing this outfit! Since the top and shorts are linen, it is natural for them to look a bit wrinkled. I could have styled the shirt with a front tuck, but instead, I left the bottom button unbuttoned and crossed the front tails of the shirt through the last button opening, giving it a front tied look.
I wore this outfit the day we drove up the west coast of Florida and stopped at the DeSoto National Memorial Park. It is part of the National Park Service and is the site where Hernando DeSoto made landfall. The site has a visitor center, village reproduction and a sandy walking trail by the shore around the park. It is a beautiful place to visit!
Most women will wear casual dresses, skirts, or shorts, day and night! I recommend packing a few sundresses that are loose-fitting and breathable. After all, you will be doing a lot of walking during your time in Key West, so you want to be comfy! Another great thing to pack for Key West is a pair of flowy beach pants.
What kind of shoes should you wear in Key West? While flip flops may be good for the beach in Key West, sandals are better for bar crawls because they offer better stability and protection.
Travelers tend to think of Florida as sporty and informal. While bathing suits, shorts and T-shirts, and fishing or golf gear are commonplace enough during the day, sophisticated restaurants, bars, and clubs can necessitate dresses and button downs, and even the occasional sports jacket.
Locals live in shorts. Unless, of course, there's a cold snap which typically happens in the fall months. Add a pair of jeans, sweater, and tennis shoes to your stacks of shorts and T-shirts to be safe. Winter in Key West is comfortable, with an average high of 75°F and average low of 65°F.
Shorts and T-shirts or tank tops are a necessity to stay comfortable during the day. Stick to breathable fabrics like linen, cotton, chambray, or rayon. Sandals are also a staple for Key West living.
Key West is a casual island in the tropics, and it gets hot. There is no dress code, so do yourself (and the airline bag handlers) a big favor and pack light. Most people tend to over-pack for Key West, because they don't realize how little they'll actually need when they're here.
Bring shorts, beach coverups, bathing suits and dresses! People in the Keys are all about comfort and rarely wear long jeans. You will see a lot of people wearing denim shorts through! Almost anything goes when it comes to swimsuits in the Florida Keys.

Perhaps one of the most popular destinations on the island of Key West, Duval Street is the main drag of downtown, running north and south from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean.
In Florida the clothing cops are more lenient. They may frown on white accessories teamed with dark business or evening wear. But they give the nod to white when it is confined to casual, resort-type settings – and provided the weather is reasonably warm. The real problem with white is the way it shows dirt.
“It's perfectly fine to wear white after Labor Day whether you are on the West Coast in California or southeast in Florida or in the northern part of our nation in New York. The shades of white such as bright, bright white or winter white or an eggshell white all (have to do with the) ensemble.”
Material-wise, a man-made fiber like nylon will keep you feeling pleasant. "Cotton will keep you cooler but once you start sweating, whether it be working out or while out in extremely warm temperatures, fabrics made out of man-made fibers will keep you more comfortable," he adds.
That ubiquitous smell is decaying sargassum, islands of floating, brown sea algae that is piling up along the beaches of Key West, the Florida peninsula, Mexico and other Caribbean islands. Happens every summer when the winds and currents come from the south.
Duval Street is a popular destination on the island where you'll find a wide variety of shops along more than a mile of street offering a diverse selection. Many of the buildings on the street are historical as well, adding some extra charm to your shopping experience.
The crime rate in the Florida Keys is low, but you should still use common sense when exploring Key West, especially at night and around hectic Duval Street and Mallory Square. Exercise caution when going into the water as well; be sure to heed all flags and warnings from authorities.
Florida Keys home decor has become widely recognized for their unique style. Hallmarks of a keys house include colorful siding, hurricane shutters, white trim and plentiful greenery.
Stick around Key West long enough and you'll see plenty of tutus, those tiny puffs of skirt worn by ballerinas. They've become a symbol of carefree living in Key West, donned by the gay, the straight and even the local mail carrier while on duty. Even dogs, big and small, wear tutus in the Southernmost City.
